The issue isn't that I'm writing while reading, it's that I'm reading, say, on the train, and that's informing what I'm writing six hours later at night.

Additionally, and apart from the fact that my reward for finishing writing is collapsing into bed at three in the morning, I'm always writing something. The day I finish this book I'll be ready to start in on the next one. Ideally (or not), the idea is to always be writing.

Still, I manage. The biggest part is awareness of the thing. God, I made the mistake of reading some Kurt Vonnegut earlier in the year and it really took a conscious act to move past that . . .

I think a lot of writers go through this because one of the tenants of writing is to be well-read. So inevitably, the writing of other authors ends up influencing what you write.

That being said, you need to limit what you read until you're done writing. Use it as a reward for finishing your writing or something.

Holy crap, I think you could give F. Scott Fitzgerald a run for his money in the number of rewrites it takes to finish a chapter. Good work thou as long as it is an excellent end product.

Heh, everyone has their share of regrets. Mind if I share a few? Thanks, thought you wouldn't mind.

Back in high school I tried out for Asst Drum Major but was overlooked for a rich girl that was less qualified but had politically strong parents.

Junior and Senior years turned down for NHS (Nation Honor Society) because the band director held a grudge over me leaving because I would not tolerate corruption. Out of three siblings I'm the only one who couldn't get in.

Later in Collage I got wind that my brigade was deploying. It was the catalyst that started one of the worst and last depressions I endured as all the tough choices that would be forced upon shift from possibility to realty.

Fort Gordon 07 Jason, a fellow soldier and friend from my hometown was KIA in Baghdad. I crawled into the bottom of a bottle and was dragged out by Dramus several months later.

Spending 4 months falling in love for the first time only to unrequited and snuffed out.

Regrets only seem like bad decisions because they are turning points; choices which snuff out and open many possibilities regardless of the path taken. All these past issues have done a great deal to shape me. If I the results were flipped around I would most likely be an office Jockey or a bookworm cloistered inside all day instead of going out and having an adventure.
